We’re really into the thick of winter at the moment in Melbourne – a mixture of biting wind, rain and frosty mornings. It’s gentle in comparison to a -4 degree morning in London, but I acclimatised to the weather a lot quicker than I thought, and 13 degrees feels positively baltic to me now. Winter is one of my favourite seasons fashion wise – I love layering wool jumpers with tailored coats or cute fur jackets. I’m trying to ‘shop my wardrobe’ as much as possible this year as I really want to buy less fast fashion and focus on investment pieces – think wool, cashmere and accessories that will really last the distance.
// Coat
A good coat is definitely my most important winter essential (it’s gonna keep you alive for a start) but it’s also the item that people probably see the most. There are so many different coat options out there – from classic tailored options (my favourite) to fun print parkas and cute fur jackets – this is a real opportunity to express yourself through your clothes. Whilst I love a classic navy or black coat (like this one from Mango), I’ve also been drawn to brighter coloured coats this season as they can really bring an outfit to life (love this and this).
// Shoes
Keeping your feet warm and dry in winter is an absolute must, so picking the right footwear is just as much an essential for me as picking the right coat. Whilst a good pair of boots are a great winter staple, I’ve definitely been wearing sneakers way more than I did last year. I’ve got my eye on these Veja sneakers – they will likely be my next purchase as I love how they look with skinny jeans and midi dresses.
// Chunky Knits
I love a good jumper – the slouchier the better. This year I’ve really been trying to recycle those I bought last season, and my focus is to only add high quality new knits into my wardrobe (if any at all). I’m looking for wool, cashmere or mohair blends which means most of the knits I have my eye on are investment pieces, but they’ll last me a good few years of use and be sure to keep me snug all through the colder months. I absolutely love this Ganni knit – it’s a mixture of mohair and wool so will be super soft and cosy, it’s a classic grey so it’s completely timeless and it’s 50% off at the moment!
// Accessories
I love using accessories to make outfits more interesting. A colourful scarf or hat, or a beautiful hand bag can really elevate a simple outfit – and it’s definitely my favourite way to inject some fun into my style. I have always loved handbags and this is an area that I love to invest in. I recently bought this beautiful Mansur Gavriel bucket bag which I’m head over heels for – it’s such a gorgeous deep green which is lovely for this time of year, and it’s a great size for every day use. I’ve also been eyeing up this Acne scarf – it’s 100% wool so beautiful quality and I love that it’s big, but not too big (I hate when scarfs are actually just blankets). A hat is an essential for me in the winter as I hate getting cold ears, and I recently bought this Ganni beanie which I’m obsessed with (SO warm) but sadly it’s sold out – these Acne offerings are super cute too though.
